What We Know About ‘Barbie’

Academy Award nominee Greta Gerwig has quite the track record, with her first two solo directorial projects (2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women) both receiving multiple Oscar nominations each, including each picking up a Best Picture nomination. When her next project was announced to be a live-action Barbie film, it felt like quite the jump, but everyone was thrilled. The hype has been building ever since, and film fans have been eagerly awaiting for more about the film as we get closer and closer to its release date, July 21st.

Gerwig and her partner, Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach, co-wrote the script together with Gerwig directing the feature film for Warner Brothers. Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie has taken on the starring role of the blonde, Mattel doll (after Amy Schumer dropped out over creative differences), and Ryan Gosling will play Ken. Reports came out early on that various actors in the ensemble cast would play other iterations of Barbie and Ken, with the latest trailer and character posters, we have confirmation of that! Actors including Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, and more are all credited as Barbie and Ken. Will Ferrell is appearing as the CEO of a toy company in an apparent nod to Mattel, the company that manufactures Barbies, Hot Wheels, and American Girl dolls. (Call him mother!) Academy Award winner Helen Mirren is the narrator of the film. The Barbie movie social accounts are going all out with individual character posters introducing the massive ensemble and their taglines.

Robbie is the everything Barbie! Grammy winner Dua Lipa, who’s contributing original songs to the soundtrack, is Mermaid Barbie. Emma Mackey is a Barbie with the Nobel Prize in physics. Issa Rae is President Barbie. Ritu Arya is a Barbie with a Pulitzer. Hari Nef is a Doctor Barbie. Sharon Rooney is Lawyer Barbie. And somehow, there are many, many more Barbies! We all know Gosling is Ken, but so are Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Liu, and Ncuti Gatwa. They aren’t listed with careers like the Barbie gals are, they’re just Ken. Rounding out the all star cast are Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell as Midge, Michael Cera as Allan, America Ferrera (human!) , Ariana Greenblatt (human!), and Jamie Demetriou (“He’s a suit”).

The latest teaser dropped, showing the full scope of the film (including incredible production design by Sarah Greenwood and costume design by Jacqueline Durran) with instantly iconic line delivery from Gosling and Robbie. The film opens in theaters on July 21, 2023.
