‘Mickey 17’ Teaser and Release Date

Coming off the heels of his monumental and multi-Oscar-winning film, Parasite, Bong Joon ho is back with his newest sci-fi project Mickey 17. Originally thought to be titled Mickey7, the same name of the book it is based on, Mickey 17 is written and directed by Bong and brings together a stacked cast including Naomie Ackie, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, and, in the lead, Robert Pattinson.

The summary of the book goes, “Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.” Will Bong Joon ho’s Mickey 17 follow this story completely? For now, no one entirely knows, but it is safe to say that Bong should be able to find a delicate balance between the book series by Edward Ashton and the film.

This first look is, of course, just a teaser. However, this teaser includes the release date of Mickey 17 which confirms audiences will have to wait quite a bit before its March 29, 2024 release.

When it comes to the Oscars, the release year of 2024 means it won’t be until the 2025 Oscars that Mickey 17 will be eligible. By 2025, it will have been 5 years since Bong Joon ho won 3 Oscars including Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. The release month of March also brings upon some hesitancy, as March is usually quite early for an “Oscars film” to release. However, it is exactly the same time that this year’s Everything Everywhere All At Once was released, and it is not out of the realm of possibility that a Bong Joon ho film could maintain its status throughout the 2025 awards season.
