It has been recently announced that the 2023 Academy Awards will take place on March 12, 2023, two weeks earlier than the 2022 Oscars. This date is still later than what Oscar viewers are used to, as the last “pre-pandemic” show took place over a month earlier than this on Feb. 9, 2020.
These dates keep most of the same format for the front half but have a much smaller window after the New Year’s Eve deadline. In 2022, Oscar nomination voting began on January 27th, this year, nomination voting has also moved forward approximately two weeks to January 12. Voters will have 6 days from the 12th to get their nominations in, and nominations will be announced on January 24th this year instead of February 8. This means studios will have the entire month of February to make final pushes for their respective films, with final voting starting March 2 and ending March 7, again, two weeks earlier than 2022’s Awards.
March 12th is the final Sunday before the 2023 NCAA March Madness tournament begins on March 14th. With March Madness beginning on the 14th, that means that Sunday will also be filled with College Basketball Conference Championships, followed by Selection Sunday on CBS, which conveniently isn’t a Disney affiliate like the Oscars are. 2022’s Selection Sunday began at 6pm ET, and the Oscars began around 8pm ET with Red Carpet interviews happening earlier. ABC will be host to the 2023 Academy Awards, and fellow Disney partner ESPN will be airing championship games before, likely during the Red Carpet and tournament news around the same time as the Oscars, which could lead to a split in viewership.
We aren’t sure right now the dates of the other major award shows that proceed the Oscars just yet – whenever they become available you can find them with our amazing Calendar – so we aren’t sure how this change will affect last-second awards pushes – think of CODA meteoric rise starting at the SAG awards. All we know is we won’t have to wait as long to find our winner, and we are in for one chaotic filled Sunday.
